Live Stream Resolution Guide: Which YouTube Settings to Use
How to choose the right resolution for your live stream — balancing quality, performance, and bandwidth to deliver the best viewer experience.
Use 1080p60 for gaming content, 1080p30 for talking head or educational streams, 720p30 if your internet connection is under 8 Mbps. Framerate matters more than resolution for gaming; resolution matters more for detailed visual content like whiteboards or text-heavy slides.
Resolution and FPS Comparison for YouTube Streaming
| Resolution | FPS | Best For | Bitrate Needed | Upload Required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 30 | Talking head, low bandwidth | 2,500–4,000 kbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p | 60 | Gaming, smooth motion | 4,000–5,000 kbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p | 30 | Educational, interviews, vlogs | 4,500–6,000 kbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p | 60 | Gaming, fast action, professional | 6,000–8,000 kbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 60 | High-detail content, large screens | 10,000–15,000 kbps | 20 Mbps |
| 4K | 30 | Premium content, future-proofing | 35,000+ kbps | 50 Mbps |
Resolution vs Framerate: Which Matters More?
| Content Type | More Important | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| FPS / Action Games | Framerate (60fps) | Fast motion appears smooth; resolution less noticeable during action |
| RPG / Slow-paced Games | Resolution (1080p) | Detailed worlds and text benefit from higher pixel count |
| Talking Head / Podcast | Either — 1080p30 | Human faces don’t need 60fps; resolution improves perceived professionalism |
| Tutorial / Screen Share | Resolution (1080p) | Text and UI elements need to be readable |
| Music / Ambiance | Either — 1080p30 | Visual clarity matters; 30fps is sufficient for slow visuals |
Setting Resolution in OBS
- Open OBS → Settings → Video
- “Base (Canvas) Resolution” — set to your monitor resolution (usually 1920×1080 or 2560×1440)
- “Output (Scaled) Resolution” — set to your target stream resolution (1920×1080 for 1080p)
- “Downscale Filter” — select “Lanczos” for best quality when downscaling from higher base resolution
- “Common FPS Values” — select 60 for gaming, 30 for other content
If you’re gaming at 1440p on your monitor but streaming at 1080p, set Base Resolution to 2560×1440 and Output Resolution to 1920×1080. OBS downscales with Lanczos filtering — you stream at 1080p quality while gaming at 1440p display quality. Zero compromise.
