Frame Rate (FPS) for Live Streaming: What to Use on YouTube

Glossary

Frame Rate (FPS) in Live Streaming

Frame rate (frames per second / FPS) is the number of individual video frames shown per second. Higher frame rates produce smoother motion. Standard streams use 30fps; gaming and action content benefits from 60fps.

What Is Frame Rate?

Video is a rapid sequence of still images called frames. Frame rate determines how many of these appear each second. Film uses 24fps. TV traditionally uses 30fps. Gaming streams often use 60fps for smooth fast motion.

Common Frame Rates for YouTube Live

  • 24 fps — Cinematic look. Uncommon for live streaming but fine for pre-recorded film-style content.
  • 30 fps — Standard for most YouTube live streams. Best balance of quality and bandwidth.
  • 60 fps — Recommended for gaming, sports, and fast-motion content. Requires higher bitrate.

YouTube Supported Frame Rates

YouTube supports 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. For standard content use 30fps. For gaming or fast-motion, use 60fps.

How Frame Rate Affects Bitrate

Doubling frame rate from 30 to 60fps roughly doubles the bitrate needed for the same quality. YouTube recommends:

  • 1080p30: 4,500–9,000 Kbps
  • 1080p60: 7,500–9,000 Kbps
  • 720p30: 2,500–5,000 Kbps
  • 720p60: 3,500–5,000 Kbps

Frame Rate for Pre-Recorded Live Streams

When using YTStreamer, the stream frame rate matches your source video. Record at 30fps for standard content, 60fps for gaming. The stream delivers it at that rate automatically — no encoder settings needed.

Is 30fps or 60fps better for YouTube live?
60fps is better for gaming and fast-motion content. For talking-head, tutorial, or standard content, 30fps is perfectly fine and uses significantly less bandwidth.
Does YouTube adjust frame rate automatically?
No. YouTube streams at the frame rate you send. It adjusts resolution for slow connections but does not change frame rate.

Stream at Any Frame Rate From the Cloud

YTStreamer streams your video at its native frame rate. No settings to configure.
